Police Organize Events to Combat Gangs and Juvenile Crime

Local police are organizing numerous events this summer in an attempt to combat gangs and juvenile crime. Last weekend, LVMPD and the Police Athletic League partnered to sponsor a block party in the Sunrise Community in Las Vegas. Police brought pizza, games and balloons in an attempt to build relationships with the community. Next week, the North Las Vegas Police Department is offering a week-long summer camp for kids age 10 to 14. The camp is called G.R.E.A.T., which stands for Gang Resistance Education and Training.

Teens and pre-teens tend to have more unsupervised time on their hands over the summer. As a result, this is a time that kids are more likely to succumb to peer-pressure and find themselves in difficult situations. Sometimes, that can mean involvement with gangs or juvenile crime. Juvenile convictions (called "adjudications") can have a substantial negative impact on a child. Juveniles involved in the delinquency system can develop a negative self-image, and this in turn can lead to additional negative behavior. In addition, juvenile adjudications can limit a child's educational and employment options. This can be especially pronounced with gang-related offenses.
