Ketamine is a drug used in both human and veterinarian medicine, primarily for inducing and maintaining general anesthesia, and typically in combination with a sedative. Ketamine is also used for sedation in intensive care, to treat bronchospasm and in emergency medicine. Ketamine causes a wide range of effects, some of which include: anesthesia, analgesia, elevated blood pressure and hallucinations. Ketamine is known for producing similar effects to phencyclidine (PCP) and dextromethorphan (DXM) and can be illegally obtained from legitimate and semi legitimate suppliers.

Ketamine was first developed in 1962 as a derivative of phencyclidine (PCP) and approved by the FDA in 1970. Ketamine anesthesia was initially introduced when it was given to American soldiers during the Vietnam War. Nonmedical use of Ketamine was documented in the early 1970s and continued to increase over the next several decades, especially at raves and other parties. It's emergence as a club drug differs from other popular club drugs such as MDMA because of its anesthetic properties (e.g. slurred speech). The increase in Ketamine's illicit use labeled it as a Schedule III substance in August of 1999, and can be found in the United States Controlled Substances Act.

Under NRS 453.336, unlawfully possessing Ketamine is a category E felony offense, punishable by 1 to 4 years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines. With some exceptions, where a person who is found guilty of a category E felony, the court shall suspend the sentence and grant probation upon conditions where the court deems it appropriate.
