Zhenli Ye Gon, a well-known Las Vegas high-roller has been arrested by the Drug Enforcement Administration in the world's largest cash seizure. Officials report that both he and his girlfriend were laundering the profits they earned from the sale of illegal drugs at Las Vegas casinos. The arrest was made at a Suburban Maryland restaurant. He was charged with smuggling drugs and laundering the profits. He was ordered to be held without bond. Mr. Ye is also wanted in Mexico for producing and trafficking drugs, and weapons charges.
Mr. Ye was staying at the posh Las Vegas hotel, the Venetian, until the authorities raided his home in Mexico and found more than 200 million dollars in cash. After making this discover, the authorities issued search warrants for his room at the Venetian. They confiscated several possessions, including a Rolls Royce and a Lamborghini the casino had given to him.
Mexican officials have requested his arrest for extradition. The police discovered $207 million at his Mexico City mansion in what the US officials are calling the biggest drug-related cash seizure in the world.
Mr. Ye's attorney, Martin McMahon, stated that his client had never faced drug charges before and he didn't have any drugs on him at the time of his arrest. He claimed that his client would not receive a fair trial in Mexico and as such, he stated, "We will vigorously oppose his extradition."
